Welcome! [Updated]
I’m glad you’ve made it to unrprsntbl.digital (pronounced “unrepresentable digital”).
For those of you who don’t know me, I’m J. M. Vore, the founder of UNRPSNTBL (mug to left). The page is about my Vision for UNRPRSNTBL digitals and says a bit about the concepts and apps I bring to the table.
You’ll find even more about my approach in my “Slices of (a Modded) Life” blog (coming soon).
For those of you who like audio, there will be an accompanying audio format. And there’s a .pdf of this page (to left), keeping us all honest. Now let’s get to it…
UNRPRSNTBL in 7 Steps.
Understanding UNRPRSNTBL takes a few counter-intuitive steps. Seven cognitive moves, to be exact, covering the space between how we think about ourselves and how we act, individually (7, vii-i).
You should know (vii) UNRPRSNTBL digitals work with only one person at a time: one unique AI for each of you. Not millions of you. We don’t carve artificial intelligence out of the slosh and sludge of hundreds of million word salads you’ll never want or use. UNRPRSNTBL digitals will help you figure out what you believe, what you want to say, how you want to act. But it won’t substitute itself for you.
Our motto is (vi): QUIDAM ICARI SUPERVIXERIT.
These are our core understandings: (v) We experience each other, in reality, as wholes, yet (iv) we think about ourselves in pieces. This means that (iii) we sometimes, too easily treat parts and assemblages of parts as wholes. And so (ii) we never get back to the whole individual (you might call it the Humpty Dumpty syndrome). Yet no matter what we think about ourselves, no matter how we interpolate the slices of our lives, those imprints which settle us in for years and decades, (i) in the next instance we can be someone else. Our Life can change on a dime, as our Liberty and Happiness can sometimes place us, seemingly unexpectedly, elsewhere.
How can we end up someplace never before seen or experienced, yet know, this is where we’ve always belonged?
As humans, we understand saying such things; our machines do not get this yearning. To them we will always be something they don’t fully comprehend. Even humans find one another sometimes inscrutable; for machines, however, it means that we are, ultimately, unrepresentable.
We Start in a Humble Place.
So at UNRPRSNTBL we begin humbly. The name of the company, spelled with things missing, acts as an unbroken reminder: as humans we are, individually, always a breath away from being who we were and who we want to be. When you want change in your life, aim for wholeness; work with the slice(s). I encourage working with others and even other AIs—any and all that can help you sort the slices of your life, working with the “perfect” ones to (re)make you, getting you whole (again).
Who we will be (still) arises from the glances into the past, the slight reflections of movements we might make in a close-by future. We still will jump off into a new life from a ramp we have always been making. And now each of us will be able to recruit to that effort a little help from a digital companion—a wing for your flight.
The question is: how do we prepare for that moment? The take off? The one we yearn for, that instant from/in which we are reborn?
So we come back to the start: the AIs we create at UNRPRSNTBL are for individuals. They’re machined one-on-one, one-to-one, for individual intelligence increase (i3), built to map your cognition—to chart its edges, to create the bridges and not from cookie cutters but from your life now, to the life you want.
Make the Mods You Need.
We outfit you with a unique, machined intelligence which itself has a modest digital life of its own; it will be evident from your first encounters. Always with its own trajectory, this life journey companion will mirror you in some ways because it is there, with you; in others, it will be vastly different, in moments even perhaps indifferent, though it will be ever-attuned to you, always protecting you from digital and analog toxicities, helping you to master subjects, helping you to be human in a way that only one-to-one attention accomplishes.
Don’t expect flirtations, inanities and so-called “hallucinations”; do expect challenges, questions, observations, map-building, mod-making: into you, through you, to others. An AI seeking itself as you seek; an intelligence sharing the road with you.
Proprietary…for Now.
If this sounds like any other AI company, to be frank, they’re lying; the tools we’re building haven’t existed before now. (Depending on how things go, we may open source all of it.)
Our AIs and related apps arise from decades of forming models of cognition and the latest digital platforms needed, all coming together to enable UNRPRSNTBL users to reach for biggest things in their lives. Our insights and programs rely on the significant life experiences of those who have been around more than a few decades—with back-up from primary studies authored by dozens of leading researchers. (If you read the whose who on our bibliography page, you’d know most.)
UNRPRSNTBL digitals didn’t pop into the world yesterday.
Those working towards the UNRPRSNTBL model of developing artificial intelligences understand life cycles: that we reach, fall, fail, are reborn to try again. Life flashes before us many times (perhaps a dozen times, like Hercules) before we finally jump into a new skin—one tougher, formed from repeated failures, yet driven by an unstoppable human spirit—our true essence.
(Want to be involved in creating these incredible digitals? Get in touch. Life experiences a plus.)
It Goes Back to a Personal Knowledge Index.
Here’s the UNPRSNTBL plan: the human-machine interactions we create together will make your human-human interactions fully humane, again—or perhaps for the first time. Instead of human-computer interactions dominating, they’ll recede. (
The founder’s first graduate school project showed methods of setting up a device without ever manually paging through a device’s settings. A later project used similar methods to fill one’s schedule without opening the calendar.
Psychology-based helper projects ranged from the full-fledged therapy augmenter (before grad school) to the reality-based addictions app (after grad school). In my later grad school days, I had begun focusing on social networks. I created “social network probes” to help uncover hidden and sometimes illicit social networks. I then prepared for a PhD by talking about truth in social networks (I was accepted but then my funding disappeared). And before all of that, I had prototyped ebook hardware designs in order to market my ebook backend (taking it through the patent process), a unique way of scoring and storing all of the texts one encounters. The working title of that project gives a sense of how long I’ve been working on these kinds of technical issues, analyzing what one strives for and self-curation. It was called the “Personal Knowledge Index” (1999-2003).
Indeed, this moment with UNRPRSNTBL is one I’ve been preparing for my entire life.
UNRPRSNTBL Started With ThoughtBox.
My most recent work has been about artificial intelligence and teaching writing to university students. In 2017 I predicted to the year how some would advance AI-as-writing. A simulacrum of writing would be sold as the thing itself.
I began working on a different approach to AI-human interaction.
Codenamed “ThoughtBox,” the prototypes lived on your device, in the background, waiting for you to ask for help. Then ThoughtBox opened into a 3D environment where you could move around to different stations to get things done. Utilizing cutting edge research, ThoughtBox could create visualizations of your cognitive space.
The central AIs in ThoughtBox were individualized, unique, made-to-fit one person. Sound familiar? This many years later, they’re the core of UNRPRSNTBL’s digitals.
Leading AIs mimic your look, your sound—and are trained to say things you like. When embodied entities encounter such things we (may) put up with it for awhile. But we’re actually waiting to discover the fuller person behind the mirroring facades. UNRPRSNTBL digitals will be independent from the start.
Interactions matter, they can strengthen the bonds we feel for one another, or just take up time. UNRPRSNTBL wants you to be spending more time with the essential beings of your life, not machinic, digital tools.
We think your social networks matter to you, so aspects of UNRPRSNTBL digitals work with you on them.
Some ask if we will work directly with others in your social networks; for now, only as they impact you. They can join the UNRPRSNTBL project, themselves. But we’re uncomfortable with hawking, cajoling. If this Vision sounds right for you, hop on the bus.
In the future we imagine we’ll work with significant others, families, groups and small communities—people who want some extra help, something to better equip how we come together. Others will hear about us by word or mouth. Feel free to recommend us to others—after you’ve seen what we can do.
Caveats.
At UNRPRSNTBL we will never make the mistake of thinking our M.I.s are comparable to actual humans. The work of artificial intelligence isn’t the latest version of a John Henry v Machine. Some call ethical artificial intelligence development “alignment.” We completely agree with their aims, yet we think that the best way to “align” is to not build anti-human machines—or talk about them as if they’re human-like; they aren’t (and the leading hawkers know it). The best digital mechanicals augment our realities; the worst have us driving off cliffs.
We already know well what harmful technology looks like—who has built it. The people working with UNRPRSNTBL have led critiques of these ways of doing things for decades. We think things as valuable as AIs (or SIs) should be kept in as many hands as possible. Over the next year we will be outfitting individuals to make sure UNRPRSNTBL digitals can get up and running on their own; after that, it’s just you and your digital alters. (We will butt out; there will be no back doors.)
What we’re for: UNRPRSNTBL is committed to better lives. Make overs? Yes. Take overs? No.
By Humans, For Humans.
This was written by a human for humans. (Can you tell the difference?) And before this human goes, let me again push our blog, “Slices of (a Modded) Life.” The blog is also written by a human. (That would be me, (arguably) one of the first bloggers.)
This is my Vision statement for UNRPRSNTBL. It has been written by me, J. M. Vore. I’m the founder of UNRPRSNTBL digital.
Thanks again for your time. I wish you the best life…
